The first two days
We recommend waiting two days before your first wash. That gives the treatment time to set fully on the hair.
Use a sulfate-free shampoo
This is the single most important thing you can do. Sulfates are strong detergents that strip the keratin layer from the hair much faster. A sulfate-free shampoo is essential, and the aftercare line your stylist recommends is the safest choice.
Swimming, sun and salt water
An occasional swim is fine. Regular swimming in chlorine or salt water can shorten the life of your treatment. Before you swim, apply a leave-in conditioner or serum to protect the hair, and rinse with fresh water afterward.
Color after a keratin treatment
We recommend doing your color first. Color and keratin work well together on the same day, with the keratin treatment done after your color. If you decide to color after your keratin treatment instead, it's best to wait a couple of weeks.
Styling your smoothed hair
- Blow-drying takes about a third of the usual time
- You can still curl it or add volume with a round brush
- Air-drying is smoother and less frizzy than before
Make the next one last longer
Keratin is cumulative. Each treatment builds on the last, so with regular appointments you can usually go longer between visits. Most clients rebook every few months as the treatment gradually and evenly washes out.
